Common questions

What is the Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan?

It is Ruger's Super Redhawk double-action revolver cut down to a 2.5-inch barrel — a stainless, six-shot magnum built to be carried in a chest or belt holster rather than hunted with at long range. The listings here weigh about 44 ounces with an overall length of roughly 7.5 inches.

.454 Casull or .44 Magnum?

The .454 Casull is the more powerful cartridge and its chamber will also fire .45 Colt, which makes practice ammunition milder and cheaper. The .44 Magnum has lighter recoil in the same gun, wider ammunition availability, and its chamber also fires .44 Special. Both are common choices for carrying in bear country.

Is it available in .480 Ruger?

Ruger has also made the Alaskan in .480 Ruger. We don't have one listed right now — use the search to check live stock, since new listings appear as they come in.

What is the difference between the Redhawk and the Super Redhawk?

They are different frames. The Super Redhawk has a longer, heavier frame designed around the strongest revolver cartridges such as .454 Casull, and on longer-barrel models the frame is machined for scope rings. The Alaskan is the short-barrel version of the Super Redhawk.

Is the Alaskan a good bear-defense revolver?

It is one of the most popular revolvers carried for that purpose because it packs a powerful cartridge into a short, stainless gun. The trade-off is heavy recoil in a 2.5-inch barrel — practice with the loads you plan to carry, and consider carrying bear spray as well. See our bear-defense caliber guide for more.

How do I buy one?

Add it to your cart and check out by card. At checkout you name the FFL dealer where you'll pick it up; the revolver ships to that dealer and you complete the background check there. You must be 21 or older to buy a handgun.
