If you’re building an AR-15 or need a reliable upper for a dedicated .223/5.56 rifle, this FN upper receiver assembly is a solid choice. These are built in FN’s South Carolina facility – the same facility producing rifles for US military contracts. That means you’re getting quality control and attention to detail that’s hard to beat.
This is a complete upper, meaning it comes with the barrel, bolt carrier group, and charging handle. It’s meant to be paired with a separate lower receiver to complete the rifle. We see a lot of folks around Anchorage using these for varmint hunting, practicing at the range, or building a lightweight rifle for back country trips. The 20-inch barrel offers a good balance of velocity and maneuverability. It works well with a variety of optics.
FN 5.56/.223 Upper Receiver Specs:
- Barrel Length: 20 inches
- Caliber: 5.56 NATO / .223 Remington
- Barrel Profile: M16-style
- Gas System: Rifle-length

The rifle-length gas system is a common choice for ARs and offers a smooth shooting experience. The M16-style barrel profile is a durable and proven design. The included MPI bolt ensures a high level of reliability, critical when you’re relying on your rifle in the field. We stock these because Alaskans need gear they can depend on.
Building an AR-15? Don’t forget you’ll also need a lower receiver, buffer tube assembly, grip, and stock to complete your rifle. We carry those parts separately as well.
Concealed Carry/Home Defense Note: While this upper can obviously be used on a complete rifle for these purposes, remember that a 20” barrel isn’t ideal for close-quarters work. Consider a shorter barrel length for dedicated CQB builds.
