Key Features
- Fixed Caliber Design — WHY IT MATTERS: Eliminates barrel-swap downtime and tooling requirements, giving you a dedicated .308 Win platform that’s ready out of the box for precision engagements without the complexity of a multi-caliber system.
- 24” Fluted Barrel — WHY IT MATTERS: Fluting reduces barrel weight by approximately 8% over a standard contour while increasing surface area for faster heat dissipation, sustaining accuracy during extended strings of fire.
- Fixed MRAD Stock — WHY IT MATTERS: Provides a rigid, repeatable cheek weld and length-of-pull without adjustable hinges that can introduce play; the stock locks into a full-length aluminum chassis for consistent zero retention.
- .75 MOA Accuracy Guarantee — WHY IT MATTERS: Barrett test-fires every SMR to this standard with match-grade ammunition, giving you a verified baseline for engagement planning and load development.
- 90% Parts Commonality with Standard MRAD — WHY IT MATTERS: Allows you to use existing MRAD accessories, triggers, and spare parts—reducing logistics burden if your unit or team already runs the MRAD system.
Who It’s For
This rifle targets law enforcement marksmen, military precision shooters, and serious long-range enthusiasts who demand sub-MOA accuracy in a single-caliber package. If you operate in a fixed-role environment—police sniper, designated marksman, or competition shooter—and don’t need barrel interchangeability, the SMR cuts cost and complexity while keeping MRAD performance. It is also ideal for armories standardizing on .308 Win who want a proven chassis system without training breaks.
Pros and Cons
- Pro: Verified .75 MOA out of the box—no tuning or aftermarket work required for precision shooting.
- Pro: 90% parts commonality with existing MRAD inventory streamlines maintenance and spare parts management.
- Con: Fixed caliber means you cannot switch to 6.5 Creedmoor or .338 Lapua Magnum without a new barrel and bolt assembly; this limits versatility for shooters who want multi-caliber capability. According to Barrett specs, the standard MRAD offers barrel swaps in under two minutes—the SMR does not.
- Con: Weight of 13.5 lbs unloaded is heavy for patrol or long carries; this is a bench, bipod, or vehicle-supported system.

FAQ
Does this rifle accept standard MRAD magazines?
Yes. The SMR uses the same MRAD-pattern .308 Win magazines as the standard MRAD. It ships with one 10-round magazine. Aftermarket and OEM 5- and 10-round magazines are compatible.
Can I swap the barrel to 6.5 Creedmoor later?
No. The SMR receiver is designed for the .308 Win bolt face and barrel extension only. Barrel swaps are not supported on this fixed-caliber variant. If you need multi-caliber capability, choose the standard MRAD.
What is the trigger pull weight?
Per Barrett specs, the MRAD SMR ships with a two-stage trigger set at approximately 3.5 lbs. The trigger is adjustable for over-travel but not for pull weight without factory service.
Is the barrel threaded for a suppressor?
No. The 24” fluted barrel is not threaded. Barrett offers threaded barrel options on standard MRAD models, but the SMR barrel is fixed. You can have a gunsmith thread it, but this voids Barrett’s warranty.
